She is still here with you, but she suffers with dementia. You miss who she used to be. Loss can be many different things.

Even the occasion of various positive events such as graduation or marriage can be a loss. Losses take many different forms. Whatever it is, all losses are very painful and they are very personal. We get heartbroken and experience pain. Sometimes, the impact of losses is significant, and we feel like we are falling into an abyss.

Experiencing losses aren't easy. We experience a range of emotions from our losses; feeling depressed, despairing, fear, helplessness, hopelessness, lost, numb, restless, regretful, worrying, anger, guilt, and so on. There is no right or wrong way to feel. Whatever you are feeling, that's real.

How are you dealing with those feelings? Are you displacing your feelings with something else such as food, shopping, rebound relationships, being a workaholic, or isolation? Are you putting a lid onto your feelings and pretending everything is ok? Or do you keep blaming yourself and telling yourself “if-onlys”?

In the large perspective, losses are inevitable in our life. It is very painful to confront your loss, but having the courage to face it can be the bridge to a fuller life.
